Band - Fourth and Fifth Grades

Music Education

At La Jolla Elementary School, our fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to take music classes, which meet once per week during school hours.

Fourth graders participate in an introductory class in which they learn about music literacy and develop fundamental music skills.  Students play the recorder, sing, and are introduced to music through other instruments. 

Our fifth-grade students are given the opportunity to choose between choir, orchestra, and band classes.  They learn about the various options/instruments at a grade level assembly, and they submit a form with their first, second, and third choices.  Accommodating all students’ first choices may not be feasible; however, the music teachers strive to ensure that students at least get their second choice. 

All students remain in the same music class for the duration of the school year.  Each week, students are expected to come to class prepared, with their instrument, music book, and homework/practice completed.
